After graduating for the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!) he returned to his hometown, having had his first three fantasy novels published in the early 1980's.He bought a bookstore, Pegasus Books, in downtown Bend in 1984, got married to Linda, raised two sons, Todd and Toby, and spent the next 30 years trying to keep the store alive.
